Avenue City School District: A Hidden Gem of Northwest Missouri

The 19.5 square miles of the Avenue City School District is located in the heart of Andrew County, just five miles east of St. Joseph and nine miles southeast of Savannah. Avenue City School District stands as one of Missouri’s most distinctive and high-performing educational institutions. Established in 1957 through the consolidation of four one-room schoolhouses—Eureka, Castle, Woodlawn, and Oakridge—the district has grown, making it the center of learning and community pride.

As one of only seventy K–8 districts in the state, Avenue City serves approximately 230 students from preschool through eighth grade. The district offers a robust Parent as Teachers program that supports families from the prenatal stage and a highly sought-after preschool program for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds. These early childhood offerings lay a strong educational foundation and demonstrate the district’s unwavering commitment to lifelong learning.

Avenue City provides a nurturing environment characterized by small class sizes, personalized attention, and strong relationships. Once our students graduate from eighth grade, families benefit from a unique opportunity: high school choice. Avenue City graduates can attend a variety of regional high schools. The current seventy-five high school age students attend schools that include Savannah, North Andrew, East Buchanan, Mid Buchanan, and schools in St. Joseph. Data shows that these students are confident in their academic preparation and readiness to succeed.

The district’s success is powered by its people. Avenue City enjoys strong community engagement, committed families, and a dedicated staff who work collaboratively to maintain a culture of excellence. Local taxpayers have consistently supported the district’s independence, recognizing the value of local control and decision-making that prioritizes student well-being.

This partnership between school and community has yielded exceptional results. Avenue City consistently ranks among Missouri’s top-performing elementary districts in math and reading achievement and has earned the state’s highest level of accreditation for over two decades.

At Avenue City School District, students thrive in a safe, supportive, and high-achieving environment. With a focus on academic excellence, early childhood development, and community values, Avenue City is not just a school—it’s a cornerstone of Andrew County and a proud contributor to the region’s future success.
